Before we talk about IG first we have to know what
it means, IG or Internet governance is formed by two words that we
will talk about each of them.
Internet
Internet stands for international network if I explain Internet
I will say when all wan (wide area network) networks from all around the world
connected to each other they will create a big network that we call that
international network or Internet in shortcut. it is the place that I notice
that Internet does not have any central governing body and any owner, we can
say the owner of Internet is all users of Internet.
Governance
In here governance means the way of management and if we try
to explain that with Internet I will say that Internet governance means the
ways to manage Internet.
Now if we see Internet is a very big and complex network
that will bring a lot of problems beside its benefits so for
that IG comes to shine, Internet governance covers all the human
right, Internet problems, solutions for the existing problems etc.
IG is a new subject in Afghanistan and there is not
enough knowledge about Internet governance among the citizens which unawareness
itself can be a big problem but fortunately NITPAA (National IT
Professionals Association of Afghanistan) organization started to introduce
Internet governance for people in Afghanistan with the name
of AFSIG (Afghanistan School on Internet Governance) which is started
since 2016 and it continues up to now recently NITPAA held AFSIG 2019
in Kabul university which the participants was university students,
Government representors, private sector representors and another
people from different parts of society that all together discussed about the
problems, solutions, rights, security, technical subjects and many
more interesting subjects, of course internet governance programs not
only held in Afghanistan countries like India, Pakistan and other countries
have their own SIG that helps them to solve their problems, there is more
bigger SIGs which is held to solve bigger problems
like APSIG (Asia pacific School on Internet Governance).
as a participant of AFSIG 2019 I learned a lot from this
program and I really appreciate programs like AFSIG.
Now a days a lot of humans uses Internet but they don’t even
know what internet means or what it is, to increases the level of knowledge about
internet governance among people we need IG programs to show them the right way
to use or mange internet.
Now let’s focus on some points in Internet governance:
Freedom and Expression in Internet
All humans have the right to have access data and expression
which now a days we can find most of our needed information from Internet and
we express most of our ideas through Internet so for that all people have the
right of expression and accessing data from Internet from anywhere and anytime.
But unfortunately, in Afghanistan there are some villages that don’t even have
electricity to spend their nights in brightness.
Women rights in Internet
There is a lot of limits for women in Afghanistan to use
Internet the best example can be social media, women use fake ID in social
medias to use that application or programs because if she uses her own photo or
name they will face to disrespectful persons that don’t know how to use
Internet in a good way, but programs like AFSIG are here to increase
the knowledge of a society about how to use Internet, how to be secure in
Internet and other useful stuff that an Internet user should know.
Social media
If we want to manage Internet we will face to social media
that needs mange too for example illegal activities should be managed, social
media security should be managed, freedom and expression in social media should
be managed and a lot of other things that should be managed in social medias
Security
In order to make our data secure in Internet we need
security to avoid unknown users access our data so data security in Internet
needs management how to secure our data what are the system weaknesses and many
more dangers that can damage or abuses our data in Internet which maybe in
social medias, email or anything else which our private data is stored in, so
here security is one of the main subjects in Internet governance which not only
Afghanistan but all countries are in trouble with that.
But all the time it is not the weakness of programs that our
data is not secure, sometimes we ourselves make the way for unauthorized users
to damage or abuse our data and we don’t even know like clicking on an email
from an unknown address, IG schools will guide us to don't fall in
such traps.
Problems in Afghanistan
in Afghanistan there are very small bunch of people that
knows about Internet governance and as I said before unawareness can be the
biggest problem not only in Afghanistan but all other countries too.
But if NITPAA or other organizations like that want to
improve the awareness of people about IG we have problems like insecurity that
slows down the process of introducing internet governance to citizens of
Afghanistan in insecure prevents.
